ENROLMENT DAY 2008/09
Saturday, 23rd August '08

SUMMER CAMP
Wks beg 14 & 21 July in Wicklow town

  :: ENROLMENT SCHEDULE 2008/9 ::

Academic Year Commencing - September 1st, 2008

Enrolment takes place approximately 2 weeks/10 days before start of term,
which is always the first week of September.
Currently enrolled students are always given the first opportunity to enrol
however, the changes in schedule, and staffing are such that NO places are guaranteed without pre-enrolling.  Therefore if you wish to have the same time and teacher as the previous academic year you must pre-enrol for a fee of €45
PROVIDED BOTH TIME AND TEACHER ARE AVAILABLE.

Regrettably, there are always changes to the staff
and therefore schedules each year.
Most staff are professional musicians who work part-time as teachers.
Many will have changing circumstances
which is why our enrolment is from a ‘clean slate’ each August.

SOME BUT NOT ALL TEACHERS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON AUGUST 23rd.

Violin enrolment will take place in Room 17.
Guitar enrolment will take place in Room 18 with David Creevy. He will process currently enrolled students for rock and classical (including Fergal Canterbury's pupils).
Voice enrolment will take place in room 20 with Kerry Anderson.
Piano enrolment will take place in room 19 with Dara Black.
Pre-Instrumental classes for 18 months to 7 years - ShantiMusic©; Drama and Leaving Certificate Courses - enrolment for these classes will take place in room 20 with Kerry Anderson.

Saturday August 23rd - all instruments, open enrolment.

PLEASE CHECK THE WEB SITE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS AS ENROLMENT TIMES AND DETAILS ARE NOT YET FINALISED. The following information is a guideline only.

Using the links above, please download and print our application form.
Remember to read the policy statements, sign and return to us at:
Wicklow School of Music & Drama
c/o East Glendalough School,
Station Road, Wicklow Town

Fees: The application fee is €25 per year.

The standard tuition rate is
€22.50 for 30 minute lesson
€33.75 for a 45 minute lesson
€45.00 for a 60 minute lesson

Monthly instalments are available by standing order only. We regret that we cannot offer credit card facility at this time.

All students studying grade 6 or higher must purchase 45 minutes.

The school requires all students from age 8 to 13 years (students over 13 optional) to attend a weekly 40 minute theory class.

Enrolment is based on 31 weeks of tuition from September to May and students wishing to pay by instalment are required to set up a standing order with the school.

Group rates: are subject to specifications based on age and ability. Subject to numbers enrolled.

Pre-enrolment: is available for those students who are unable to attend enrolment weekend and for whom a specific day and time is critical. The fee is €45. The class time, teacher and day will be held from the date it is booked. Pre-enrolment is only available from August 15th.

Cashier: Therese Porter will process all payments in room 21. She will issue you a receipt and a small calendar for you to keep handy. Please note you are required to purchase a theory book at this time.

Why theory classes? As a private school my strongest objective is a high standard of tuition. Most instrumental teachers will tell you that they spend a lot of time each lesson on music literacy (how to read music) and basic things like keeping a steady beat. This is a source of frustration because their primary function in 30 minutes is to focus on technique and expression. These classes will nurture good musicianship and we hope these skills will last for life. These classes will be scheduled in September after each student has completed an exam to assess which level of study and therefore which class they require. These classes are included in fees.

STAFF CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Clodagh Clarke and Dave Croydon will not be teaching this year.
David Creevy has changed his hours to Wed evening and Saturday afternoon only.
Stella O’ Connor is our new violin teacher who is available from 9:00 Saturdays.
ShantiMusic and Drama will only run with sufficient numbers, please call to place your child on the list.

Choir: waiting list only - please put your child's name down on enrolment day or by calling the school and we will contact you.

ShantiMusic©
This is a curriculum created by the WSMD which uses an alternative and very effective method to teach the elements of music AT PRE-INSTRUMENTAL LEVEL. The ShantiMusic method also uses movement to aid concentration and stimulates different parts of the brain to reinforce learning and enhance memory. The benefits go well beyond music education because yoga postures and philosophy are used to bind the course from start to finish. The main aim of the course from 18 months all the way to seven years, is to prepare children for the study of an instrument. However the WSMD has found that this is an opportunity to incorporate ideas which enhance the process, such as physical movement to music from dance and yoga postures; and art projects. This course replaces Kinder Music, as it incorporates all the successful elements of Kinder Music plus the added benefits of yoga, which improves your child's physical co-ordination, growth and development. More information will be available at the enrolment weekend.

DRUMMING IS BACK! We are delighted and very excited to announce the arrival of Dave Hingerty to the school. Dave operates his own drum academy in Dublin and is perhaps best known for his work with The Frames as a former band member. Dave will teach Drum Kit at the WSMD this year which will include performance Workshops. For more about Dave’s distinguished career to date please go to www.davehingerty.com. Bonnie Stewart is also teaching Drum Kit this year and is available on a Saturday.

SUZUKI ALL THE WAY! This year violin will be taught by a very well qualified member of Suzuki Ireland. This is a highly effective method of training very young children in Violin and incorporates group classes. This year Ms. Stella O’Connor will join us each Saturday for classes. For more about the method visit www.suzukiireland.net

STAGE CRAFT FOR VOICE STUDENTS! This year voice students will be treated to performance workshops by Lesley Dowdall. Leslie is a successful singer/songwriter who will conduct the mid-term performance workshops for all voice students at the school teaching mic technique and on-stage choreography and posture to help students relax and feel confident on stage. For more about Leslie go to her website: www.lesliedowdall.com
