More about ShantiCeol©...

This is a curriculum created by the WSMD which uses an alternative and very effective method to teach the elements of music AT PRE-INSTRUMENTAL LEVEL. The benefits go well beyond music education because yoga postures and philosophy are used to bind the course from start to finish.

The main aim of the course from 2 years all the way to seven years, is to prepare children for the study of an instrument. However the WSMD believes that this is an opportunity to incorporate ideas which enhance the process, such as physical movement to music from Dance and Yoga postures. Another goal is to improve physical co-ordination, growth and development.

The course contains modules taught over 28 weeks, each with a different theme. These themes such as The Ocean used in this year's Summer Camp, help to give the course meaning and interest. The children will spend 50 minutes in a fun setting playing games, creating art projects and telling stories using yoga postures and dance. This year's summer camps used this method and were a great success.

The school has worked with a number of consultants, including Mairead Ni Chondran, one of the country's leading music education specialists and member/exponent of the Kodaly Society of Ireland, to create this curriculum to ensure that it is an effective educational process and a fun, caring environment for your children.

Fees are €9 for 40 minutes /€12 for 50 minutes and are held each Saturday morning at the East Glendalough School. See the Schedule for ages and class times.

ShantiCeol© incorporates ideas from the following sources: The Mozart Effect, harnessing the Power of Music in Health, Education & Wellbeing as well as The Listening Program which uses the benefits of classical music for the developing brain. The school is a member of the Kodaly Society and The Association of Music Schools.

Music Appreciation & Theory Classes
This is a mandatory requirement of study with the WSMD. These classes are a necessary aid to the study of an instrument. Without them a student's progress is slower due to the fact that instrumental teachers are able to focus on technique instead of music lietacy and other elements covered in theory classes. Many parents have commented that they studied an instrument but cannot remember how to play. It is my belief that these classes will promote good musicianship and will promote life long skill.

Alternatively Children's Choir seeks to accomplish fundamentals in literacy and aural skills through singing. Both classes are informal and aim to be fun. HOWEVER the children are expected to work hard in class and at home.
