The aim of this Dance School is to provide a nurturing, positive environment in which all students can develop their mental, physical, and emotional ability through the medium of Dance. The students are trained through the Royal Academy of Dance London Ballet syllabus and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance modern syllabus. Pupils have progressed on to professional work and a number have gained degrees in dance. Motivation and enthusiasm are encouraged by a highly qualified teaching staff and the use of Choice Theory and Reality Therapy.

William Glasser's psychology system Choice Theory is based on the premise that the only person you can control is yourself. This concept once absorbed is a hugely valuable life skill and is assimilated by the students from four years old in small steps. This is achieved by avoiding blaming, criticizing, belittling etc which are seen as ineffectual behaviors that produces only short term results. What is required in order to be a technically strong dancer is explained within the context of each year's syllabus and then the students are asked to evaluate on the criteria they have mastered. This promotes a confident and sound understanding of personal quality and ability independent of the teacher's praise. This self-evaluation is the key to personal progress.

By meeting their Basic Needs for Survival, Freedom, Fun, Power and Belonging within the class context, both students and teachers enjoy the reward of positive learning. Reminding students that they have chosen to attend and other options are available to them eliminates behavioral problems. The multiple intelligences, verbal linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily - kinesthetic interpersonal and intrapersonal as described by Howard Gardner are equally valued as opposed to solely aiming for skill acquisition. This broad-spectrum approach encourages a more rounded and mature self-understanding that will be of benefit in all walks of life.

We welcome Aine Stapleton to the staff. Like Zoe Patterson, Aine is an ex pupil of W S D. Aine took her degree in Chichester and is working with Myriad Dance Co. in Wexford and her speciality is Contemporary dance. Kathryn Gleeson is also joining to assist in ballet classes. She is studying for her dance degree by distance learning and teacher training in this school. She is already an outstanding dancer with her Advanced RAD ballet exam and comes all the way from Sydney! We would like to thank Jade Duffy for the years she assisted and we wish her well in her life choices.

Ballet gives the essential technique and postural habits from which other genres can be more easily assimilated. This year we have broadened the options for students by introducing Cheerleading / Hip hop for juniors and Contemporary for seniors. With Musical Theatre, Modern Dance, Jazz and Ballet they form a broad base for progression in dance for fun or to the semi and professional levels. A senior performance group will be formed which will also include opportunities for choreography- an exciting year ahead!

Fees have increased due to expenses. However, along with quality teaching and teacher ratio there is also supervision in the changing room and students may do their homework there before or after class. No extra charge will be made but please sign in and out with supervisor.

Code of Practice
As we have a waiting list we request that a term's notice or payment in lieu should be given in the event of leaving.
Fees are due at the beginning of each term. Lapsed fees may incur loss of place.
Proper notice should be given to a previous school attended.
The principal's approval is required before dance classes of a similar discipline are attended elsewhere.
The principal's approval is required before a student takes part in an external dance performance.
Unnamed lost property will be either given to charity or sold for student sponsorship.

Primary school children are requested to wait INSIDE the school premises until collected.

Parents/Guardians are reminded that dance teaching does benefit both pupil and teacher by the use of minimal appropriate physical contact. This allows for positive feedback in relation to correct placing and range of movement as well as support and encouragement. As Glasser's ideas of'Choice Theory' are employed in this school, teaching is always through positive reinforcement and self-evaluation. If you have any queries please feel free to contact me. Observing a class may be arranged for those unused to our dance class procedures.
